Mineral Dyes

Learn About Rugs
Mineral dyes come from ocher (yellow, brown, red), limestone or lime (white), manganese (black), cinnabar and lead oxide (red), azurite and lapis lazuli (blue), and malachite (green).

Antique Quilt Dating
Some mineral dyes such as Prussian blue, manganese bronze, chrome yellow, antimony orange, iron buff pigments were fixed to cotton with the use of egg albumen or blood. Also wheat gluten or milk lactarine were used. Heat and acid were also needed to make them colorfast.
