| Christmas stockings are fun to knit because you don't have to be exact on the size, you can use up leftover yarns and you only need to make one. For this stocking I used handspun yarns. | |

Length to Heel:12 inches

Knitting Motifs:Alphabet PatternsContinuing in the light green colour as background, knit the Name of the person the stocking is for. Here are the motif patterns for a knitted alphabet. Remember that you are starting the stocking from the top so you will need to knit the letters upside down. |

The Heel of the SockKnit in patterns until the leg of the sock measures 10-12 inches. Divide the stitches and place half the stitches onto a stitch holder, or leave on 1 or 2 double point needles. The back of the heel is knit using half of the sock width (27 stitches) Changing to red coloured yarn, continue in plain knit until the back of the heel measures 1-1/2 inches. Turning the heel:Start the turning on the heel on the right side of the work. Knit 16 stitches Knit 2 together, Knit 1, Turn Purl 7, purl 2 together, purl 1, Turn Knit 8, knit 2 together, knit 1, Turn Purl 9, purl 2 together, purl 1, Turn Knit 10, knit 2 together, knit 1, Turn Purl 11, purl 2 together, purl 1, Turn Knit 12, knit 2 together, knit 1, Turn Purl 13, purl 2 together, purl 1, Turn Knit across the following row Pick up 7 stitches along the side of the heel
Change yarn to Dark Blue.
Decrease at the gusset of the sock:Knit across the top part of the sock (27 stitches) Knit across the 7 picked up stitches Knit across the bottom heel of the sock Knit 5 stitches across the picked up stitches, Knit 2 together. Knit across the top part of the sock (27 stitches) Knit 2 together, Knit across the remaining 5 picked up stitches. Continue knitting in the round, decreasing as above at the gusset points, for 4 more rows ( 56 stitches) Continue knitting in pattern motifs until the foot of the sock measures 3-4 inches. |

Toe Decrease:Change to red coloured yarn for the toe of the sock. Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 22, knit 2 together, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 22, knit 2 together, knit 1 (52 stiches) Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 20, knit 2 together, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 20, knit 2 together, knit 1 (48 stitches) Continue to knit as above, reducing 4 stitches per row, until 16 stitches remain. |

Sewn Toe Cast-Off:Break yarn, leaving a tail about 4 times as long as the circumference of the sock.Thread a tapestry needle. Sew forward (right to left) through two stitches as if to purl, leave the stitches on. Sew backward (left to right) through one stitch as if to knit and remove the stitch. Machine FeltingTo strengthen and thicken the sock so that gifts don't stretch the sock out, I machine felted it after sewing in the yarn ends.I have a front loading washing machine. I put the sock into the machine - by itself and ran a rinse cycle using warm water. |
