Scandinavia - Goddess of Spinning and the Sun
The Bronze Age
The sun is represented as the wheel of a chariot, being drawn by animals, or being carried on a ship or chariot. This idea of the sun being transported in such a manner did survive up through the Viking Age in the sun goddess Sunna and is well supported by archeological evidence.
The Saxon Deities
The deities give their names to the days of the week: Sunna (Sunday) Mona (Monday).
Santa Lucia
A print of Santa Lucia. Lucia exhibits traits of many ancient goddesses. She is almost certainly a face of Freya, "Mistress of Cats," whose special season was Yule and who was dedicated to the dispensing of wealth and plenty. The Norse sun-goddess Sunna, whose emblem is the firey wheel, is also present in St. Lucy.
