Training

I learned to weave at Ruthie's Weaving Studio in Portland in 1984, and took fiber classes at the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts. I taught myself tablet weaving and ply-splitting from a variety of books, and have also taken workshops with Peter Collingwood, Virginia Harvey, and Marijke van Epen.

Loom Weaving

Topics include tablet weaving structures and designs, warp twining, Andean pebble weave, tablet-woven calligraphy, traditional double-faced designs from Indonesia, Persia, and Burma. I also teach workshops on how to use a reed with tablets to create scarves.

Hand Spinning

Dyes

Other Fiber arts

I teach workshops in ply-splitting structure and design, including ideas for ply-split jewelry, baskets, and rugs.

Travel

I offer private and group instruction in my studio, and travel to teach at guilds and weaving conferences. I also offer seminars and demonstrations. I have taught around the USA, and in Canada, Mexico, and England, and am willing to travel anywhere.

Comments

Both tablet weaving and ply-splitting are slow, meditative techniques. Ply-splitting has the benefit of being completely portable. I have written several books, including "Please Weave a Message: Instructions and Graphs for Tablet-Woven Calligraphy", "Two-Hole Andean Pebble Weave", and "Great SCOT! A Beginner's Guide to Single-Course Oblique Twining". I also offer books, tools, and kits by mail. Please visit my website to learn more!
