Isin Hattu - Boiled Wool Hats
|
| My father told me stories about how his Saami mother used to spin wool, and knit hats, socks and mittens for him and his brothers as they were growing up in northern Lapland. She would boil the handknit hats and mittens after knitting, to felt them and make them wind and water proof. |
Dyed yarns were in short supply at that time in northern Finland. My grandmother was very happy when Norwegian fishermen would visit their village and bring her a supply of brightly coloured yarns. She wove these into narrow bands and braids to decorate her handiwork.

The Isin hats and mittens are designed in the tradition of my Sami grandmother. The hats are made from handspun natural merino wool. They are handknit and then boiled and felted. And are decorated with a colourful band that has been handwoven on a Sami style weaving reed -
In traditional Sami colours, of course.. |
