Kukka Flower Transparency
Kukka Flower Transparency

Warp: 16/1 Wet spun linen
Weft: 16/1 Wet spun linen
Weft inlay: Hand spun bleached tow flax
Size: 40 cm x 40 cm

“Kukka” Flower is woven in a traditional Finnish style transparency weave structure called “Kuultokudos” (Shimmer Weave). The fragile texture of the fine linen background and delicately placed pattern inlay allow for a changing interaction of light and space, creating a fine ethereal sight. Fabulous simple elegance.

Transparency weaves are thought to have originated in Japan or Scandinavian countries. Transparencies became popular in Finland in the early 1900’s and were woven for use as sheer window curtains. In the 1970’s, interior designers used transparencies to create large free-hanging room dividers or wall hangings.

Karelian Belts

Karelian Style Handwoven Belts

In Karelia and in other parts of Finland narrow belts and braids were woven using cards (or tablets) or small hand-held rigid heddle looms. The woven belts or braids were used for decoration for skirts, for decorative edgings on clothing, hat trims or as laces for boots and shoes.
Different regions in Finland had their own characteristic designs or colours.

These belts are handwoven with pure cotton, linen or wool yarns using traditional weaving methods. Wear them as a belt or use them as trim for clothing, handles and edgings for bags
Karelian style belts can be custom ordered in a selection of colours and designs. Prices start at £18.00 per meter. Please contact me if you would like to place a special order.

Sauna Towels

Handwoven Linen Sauna Towels

These handwoven Finnish style Sauna towels are made from high quality and heavy weight linen yarns imported from Finland. Flax one of the Bast fibres, has been used for towels for many centuries. Because Linen (flax) is spun from the inner core of the flax plant, it is able to absorb water, even from the air. On dry days, linen can feel a bit rough , but on more humid days, linen becomes soft and smooth to the touch.
Linen towels improve with age. The sauna towels can be machine washed and ironed while damp. When you first get the towel wash it in fairly hot water (60 degrees) This will help to soften the fibre. For future washing, use a cooler temperature. Linen doesn’t like a lot of heat so machine drying is not recommended.
