Plant Dyed Rya Rug Yarns

For those who would like to make their own traditional style rya rug, I am now hand dyeing rya yarns using natural plant dyes. The world of plant dyes offers much variety and gentle colour to yarns. Each batch is uniquely dyed as the colour and shading varies depending on the soil and growing conditions of the plants, the acidity of the dye water and the length of time in the dyepot. This variety of colour gives a plant dyed rya rug a rich depth of shading.

I use high quality worsted spun wool for my hand dyed rya rug yarns. The yarns are quite soft to the touch. Rya rugs are not designed to be used as a floor rug but are meant to be hung on a wall as a tapestry and family heirloom. Please treat your hand made rya rug with care, so that you can pass it on to future generations. Plant dyes are more sensitive to gentle fading. Please hang your rya rug in a place that is not in direct sunlight, to help preserve the brightness of the colours.

If you are using my handwoven rya rug backing for making your own rug, the backing is woven at 15 knots per 10 cm.
I have worked out a rough chart of how much rya rug yarn you will need to purchase, based on a pile length of 3 cm and 4 strands of yarn per knot. If you wish to make a rug with a longer or thicker pile, then you will need to order more yarn than suggested.

Small Size Rya Rug Kits

Please note: I am not currently making rya rug kits.
However, you may still purchase rya backing and Plant Dyed Rya Rug Yarns so that you can design your own handmade rya rug.

The pure wool yarns are a finer weight than those of my previous rya rug kits and are designed with a shorter pile length and are not designed to be a ‘shaggy’ style of rya.

For those who don’t wish to DIY, I would be happy to weave a rya rug for you.

History of the Rya Rug

Ikkuna 2015 Rya Rug
Ikkuna 2015 Rya Rug

In Scandinavian countries, Rya rugs (ryijy matto) have been found dating back to the early 1400’s. They were used as blankets or sled coverings, the knotted side being closest to the body providing warmth. The Ryas at this time were mainly of natural wool colours, natural white, grey, black.

The Rya developed further with the use of colour and pattern. Decorative ryas date back to the 1700’s. In Finland, as a wedding approached, a weaver would be commissioned to weave a Rya for the young couple. The Rya was used as a prayer rug during the wedding ceremony. The bridal couple would kneel on the Rya as they exchanged their wedding vows. The colourful tapestry was then displayed in their home as a reminder of their wedding day. If one of the spouses passed away, the Rya would then be spread on the bed during the day and the Rya became known as a widow’s blanket. The Rya rug became a family heirloom to be passed on to future generations. In Finland, the commissioned weaving of a wedding Rya is still a tradition today.

In the 70’s the Rya rug again became fashionable, with designers such as Eames using bright and bold colours and pop art designs. The pile was long and shaggy. The shag rugs were used as decorative floor coverings.

Bespoke Rya Rugs

These Scandinavian style rya rugs are handwoven using fine quality, pure wool yarns. All of the rya yarns that I use are hand dyed at the time of the order. Hand dyed yarns have slight variations in colour giving the rug an additional depth of shading.
The rya knot yarns are fairly short, and closely sett, resulting in a soft pile that stands about 1.5 – 2.0 cm in height. The finished rugs are plush and very soft to the touch.

Ikkuna 2015 Rya Rug
Ikkuna 2015 Rya Rug

I am not currently weaving rya rugs as I am working on other commissions. I will resume making rya rugs again in October/November. Pleae enquire for more information and pricing.

PLEASE NOTE:
These “Rya Rugs” are designed to be hung on a wall as a piece of art. Using a Rya as floor or area rug is not recommended.

Sadly, over the years I have received many emails from rya rug owners, asking how to repair the hole in their rug that was created by a table or chair leg. A repair is possible sometimes, but this should not have happened. Ryas are traditionally used as a bed covering or a wall hanging. A Rya should be treated as a treasured piece of art, hung on the wall, not on the floor and can last for a lifetime when cared for properly.

Rya Rug Backing

For those who don’t weave but like the plushness of a rya rug I now am able to supply the backing so you can make your own rya.
The backing is woven using a pure linen warp and wool weft.

The backing can be woven in different widths and can be purchased by the meter. The weft is woven in natural white or grey wool.
The warp is pure linen yarn and the weft is 100% wool yarn.
The backing is woven at approx. 15 knots per 10 cm. width.
The spacing between each row is approx. 1.1 cm

Please Note:
I make rya rug backing in batches, a few times year – in between weaving other items. If you would like to place an order, I will add your order to the next rya rug backing warp. If you need a special size, please ask.

Rya Rug Backing

I also now have available plant dyed rya wool yarns that are suitable for use with this rya backing. Please visit Plant Dyed Rya Rug yarns for more information.

I usually have some of the narrower rya rug backing in stock.
For wider width rya rug backing, please contact me regarding a custom order.

All rya products are Custom orders and require a 50% non-refundable deposit.
This covers my cost of the yarns – should you change your mind and not want the product.
All payments are via Paypal.

Rya Rug Instructions
Here are some instructions on how to sew rya knots onto a pre-woven rya backing fabric.

#rya #ryarug

Rya Instructions

The Finnish Rya is made of knotted wool(with about a 1 – 1.5 inch pile), tied to a handwoven fabric backing. The special rya backing is woven using linen warp and wool weft. The backing is woven with spacing to allow the rya knots to be tied or sewn in.

Rya Rug Backing
Rya Rug Backing

Some shifting of the weft threads may occur during shipping and handling. The spacing can be gently pushed back into place before starting a row of knots.

The Rya knot is formed around 2 warp threads. The warp threads are the linen yarn threads that run vertically in the fabric.

Rya Knot
Rya Knot

To make the Rya knots, use 2 or 3 strands of yarn.
Length about 1.5 – 2 yards.
Thread them onto a needle provided with the kit
2 strands creates a rya that will lay fairly flat
3 strands creates a rya that has quite a dense pile
Sufficient yarn is provided for either style of rya.

You may work the knots from either the right or the left of the fabric.
I find it best to start from the bottom of the design and work your way up to the top.
Centre the design on the fabric.

To Sew the Knots

Rya Knot Step 1
Rya Knot Step 1

Start from the inside of the group of 2 warp threads
(Working from left to right:
Pull the yarn through and up to the left.
Hold back about an inch of yarn( the length of the wooden ruler provided)
This forms the first part of the knot.

Rya Knot Step 2
Rya Knot Step 2

Thread the needle through the next warp thread
from the outside to the inside of this group of 2 warp threads.

Rya Knot Step 3
Rya Knot Step 3

Tighten up the loop that has formed around the 2 warp threads.

Rya Knot Step 4
Rya Knot Step 4

Wrap the thread around the ruler.
This forms the Rya loop.

Repeat the above procedure for the required number of knots in the design, leaving the knots on the ruler as you work your way across the fabric.
When the ruler fills up, or you are starting a new colour, the ruler can be moved and the process repeated.

When you have a full row of knots, give them a gentle tug to tighten them securely to the backing, before starting the following row.

After you have tied a row of loops, the knots can be cut to form the pile.

Using the ruler as a guide, trim the knots carefully.
Once the Rya project is finished, allow the yarns to settle for a few days, then trim again to get an even pile.

Rothko Rya Kits

Please note: I am not currently making Rya Rug kits, however you may purchase rya rug backing and plant dyed yarns so that you can design your own rya rug.

Rothko has been the inspiration for this series of Rya Rug Kits. In his art, Rothko used a unique blend of many layers and shades of colour to produce his artwork. Each rya knot consists of an original multi-colour blend of different shades, types and thicknesses of wool yarn giving the finished rya rug a depth of colour and texture.

The yarns for each Rothko Rya kit is individually hand dyed at the time of your order. The colours will vary slightly due to the nature of hand dyeing, so may not look exactly as in the pictures shown.

Each rya rug kit comes with hand woven rya backing, rya needles, a ruler, a pattern chart, hand-dyed pure wool yarns, and a suggested blend of colours, but you are free to create your own individual blend within each rya knot. The completed piece will be an original, designed by you.

A comment from a happy customer:

“It is the beautiful colours of your wools that make this Rya such a delight to work on, ( have already done 6 inches). And I love the complicated bits and then the solid colours. (Heaven knows how you managed to dye them all)”
