Vadmal is a felted woolen cloth that has been beaten in cold water to make it smooth and water resistant. It is lovely for use in Saami style clothing, embroidery and for Viking style textiles.
VADMAL (Wadmal) is a type of woven and felted wool that has been made in Scandinavian countries for many years. The wool cloth is woven on a floor loom and then beaten in a hammer mill until the wool felts to a smooth surface. The Vadmal felting process creates a wool cloth that is water and wind resistant.
Along with reindeer skins, Vadmal cloth is used by the Sami for much of their clothing and crafts. Wadmal is also used for reenactment clothing.
The Vadmal Wool fabric is made with natural wool colours and may show some small darker spots in the fabric. This is not dirt but is small flecks of naturally coloured sheep wool (greys and browns) The surface of Vadmal wool is smooth and makes a wonderful fabric for hand stitching and embroidery.

Please contact me if you are looking for Sami craft supplies that you don’t see listed. I have a small studio so space is limited and I don’t keep everything in stock but can order it in.
I make a selection of reindeer leather jewelry, bracelets, arm bands, necklaces using natural materials and techniques in the tradition of my ancestors. I use natural reindeer leather, organic cotton yarns and pewter thread.
The bracelets or arm bands are decorated with organic cotton bands that have been woven on Sami style heddles or a Scandinavian band loom. The Sami wove colourful bands for many uses, as shoe laces, as belts, as ties for their sleds, as harnesses for the reindeer, as trim and decoration on their clothing. Some of the bracelets are also embroidered with Pewter thread, known as poor man’s silver that was also used to decorate their clothing.
Reindeer leather is a precious commodity that is difficult to source. Most of the reindeer hides are used by the Saami people for their own clothing and personal use. I am only able to purchase the reindeer leather in small quantities that are sold as scrap leather. Nothing is wasted. I order all of my supplies from the Sami people in Norway, Sweden and Finland.
Some of the Sami bracelets and arm bands are also trimmed with fish leather.
These are hand made reindeer leather clutch purses. The reindeer leather pouch has been made using reindeer leather scraps in various colours. The purse is lined with natural linen fabric and has a zipper enclosure. The clutch bag has a tablet woven wristlet strap.

Fish skins have been tanned and used for clothing, purses, and even armour in many cultures and countries.Fish skin in modern days is mostly considered to be a waste product and is discarded or ground up for fertilizer or animal foods. The fish skin waste can be reclaimed, tanned and made into beautiful and functional items. Fish leather is stronger than a tanned animal hide because the connective tissues are more like a woven material. When properly tanned, fish leather does not smell fishy, but is soft and supple, much like softly tanned suede leather.
I have begun to work with this wonderful material that nature provides, and to combine it with reindeer leather and wool vadmal, to make purses, bags, bracelets and other items. Because both the fish and reindeer leathers quite delicate to work with most items are carefully hand stitched together rather than using a sewing machine. Each piece can take 8 – 20 hours to complete. Each piece is made from a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of fish leather so every item is unique. The colours and textures vary depending on the species of fish and the tanning methods used. I try to source only fish leather that has been ethically sourced and tanned with natural tanning ingredients.

Sami Coffee Bag
This style of reindeer leather bag was used by the Sami to carry their coffee. Coffee was an important commodity to the Sami, so they kept it close to them and carried it in a special bag tied to their waist. As the Sami are a nomadic people, when they set up camp in an area, the wood fire was lit, and the coffee pot was set to brew, ready to be shared with everyone once the tents and camp were set up.
The Sami coffee bags are hand stitched using reindeer leather and Vadmal wool fabric. The bags are decorated with traditional Saami band weaving and pewter thread embroidery.
Vadmal is a woven wool cloth that has been felted. Felting the fabric after weaving, thickens the cloth and makes it wind and water resistant as well as warm. Vadmal is generally woven in a tabby or a twill weave on warp weighted or floor looms. In order to felt the fabric, the wet fabric can be pounded in a hammer mill for several hours in order to flatten and thicken the fabric. The hammering process creates a fabric that looks more like “real cloth” and produces a stable fabric with very little nap and the wool keeps its shine.
Sami coffee bags will be available for purchase through my Web Shop soon.

I make these reindeer leather pouches and purses using small textile scraps of reindeer leather, because reindeer leather is hard to obtain. The Saami raise reindeer herds mostly for their own use. They use every part of the animal, for food, for clothing, for tools and other items. Only a small portion of reindeer leather is sold to the general public. Nothing is wasted.
Pewter or Tin thread was known as the poor man’s silver. The Saami would melt down pewter or tin plates and spin the metal into a fine thread which they used to make jewellery and decorate their clothing and other items.
The bags and purses are all hand made. The bags are decorated with pewter thread that is hand stitched onto the leather or onto wool vadmal fabric. I use traditional Saami rock are symbols for most of the designs.
Some of these handmade products will be available for purchase through my Web Shop soon.

These Ipad sleeves and covers are made with Norwegian wool vadmal fabric and trimmed with Saami band weaving. Vadmal is a type of wool cloth that has been woven and then beaten while wet in a hammer mill for about 8 hours. The beating treatment felts the wool and makes it wind and water resistant.

Sami Shoe Bands
Shell Bands, Skallebånd, Vuoddagat, Paulanauhat
Sami patterned shoe bands were traditionally woven on a rigid heddle loom. The woven bands were worn wrapped around the ankles and their purpose was to fasten the reindeer leather boots to the feet and to protect the legs against the snow, similar to modern day gaitors.
These Sami shoe bands have been woven in the classical tradition using high quality worsted wool yarns imported from Sweden and Finland. All the shoe bands are woven with wool, not cotton yarns, as the wool provides insulation against the snow. The woven wool band will felt with use, making it thicker and more durable against the snow. The shoe bands can be hand washed in cool water and hung to dry. Please do not place them in a washing machine or dryer.
The woven section of the shoe band can be 1.5-3 meters in length, with an additional .5 to 1 meter at each end that is braided or twined. The woven section is wrapped around the middle of the calf, down to the ankle. The braided section is used for tying the band to the ankle. The woven end of the shoe band is stitched with a piece of wool vadmal. The braided end is finished with a tassle.
The woven bands are approximately 1.5 inches or 3-4 cm in width.
The Sami shoe bands can be ordered in a choice of lengths. Measure around your foot by wrapping a tape measure around from your ankle to mid calf. The band should be long enough to cover your pant leg to keep the snow out.
The bands can be ordered in a variety of designs. The Sami often wore shoe bands with simple designs for everyday wear, and more intricately patterned shoe bands for special occasions.
