Width: approx 18 cm (7 inches)
Height: 12 cm (4.5 inches)

Reindeer leather is a precious commodity that is difficult to source. Most of the reindeer hides are used by the Saami people for their own clothing and personal use. I am only able to purchase the reindeer leather in small quantities that are sold as scrap leather. I stitch the small pieces together in order to make purses, pouches, reindeer bracelets and other items. Nothing is wasted. Each purse is unique and a combination of different coloured leathers depending on what I have on hand.
If you would like to order a custom made purse in a different size or colours, please ask. Custom orders take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete. I ask for a 50% Non-refundable deposit on all Custom orders. This pays for the material costs, should you change your mind.

Naalbinding Supplies

Nalbinding yarns, needles, patterns and kits can now be purchased directly through my Web Shop or visit PaivatarYarn on Etsy Shop: paivataryarn.etsy.com

Naalbinding Needles
Nalbinding needles can vary greatly in both size and style. Much like knitting needles, using the correct type of needle can make a difference in your finished work.
The size of the eye in the needle is important – a larger eye allows you to fit longer lengths of yarn into the eye. By accordion folding the yarn, you can use longer lengths. I often fold the yarn several times, so I am able to use lengths that are 5-10 meters in length. This speeds up the nalbinding considerably because I don’t have to join as many ends together, which can be time consuming.
The width or circumference of the needle can also make a difference. You can adjust the tension of the loops by tightening the loop around your thumb. If you have a large thumb then the loops will be looser. If you wish to make tight loops or are using a fine yarn, you can also adjust the tension by tightening the loop around the needle, similar to using different sizes of knitting needles.
Nalbinding needles can be long or short, and which one you use is personal preference – whatever length fits most comfortably in your hand.

Short Bone Naalbinding Needles
Each bone needle is individually made so the needles may vary slightly from what is shown in the photos. The bone naalbinding needle measures approx. 6 cm in length, is a bit narrower than some of the other nalbinding needles and has a smaller eye.
This style of needle would be suitable for working with thinner and lighter weight yarns such as 4 ply and sock wool. If using a thicker yarn such as a DK weight, the eye of the needle will fit about 2 strands of yarn.
The bone needle is very smooth, well sanded and comfortable to work with.

Long Bone Naalbinding Needles
Each bone needle is individually made so the needles may vary slightly from what is shown in the photos. The bone naalbinding needle measures approx. 9 cm in length, is a bit narrower than some of the other nalbinding needles and has a smaller eye.

Carved Bone Naalbinding Needle
This carved naalbinding needle measures approx. 9 cm in length and has a fairly large eye.
This style of needle would be suitable for working with longer and thicker weights of yarn such as double knit, Aran or chunky yarns.

Wooden Nalbinding Needles
Each wooden needle is individually made so the needles may vary slightly from what is shown in the photos. The naalbinding needle measures approx. 9 cm in length and has a fairly large eye. The wooden needle is very smooth, well sanded and comfortable to work with.
This style of needle would be suitable for working with longer and thicker weights of yarn such as double knit, Aran or chunky yarns.

Horn Nalbinding Needles
The black horn naalbinding needle measures approx. 9 cm in length and has a fairly large eye. The horn needle is very smooth and comfortable to work with.
This style of needle would be suitable for working with longer and thicker weights of yarn such as double knit, Aran or chunky yarns.

Naalbinding Neede Cases
This is a hand carved naalbinding needle case. The bone needle holder is a hollow tube with a brass ring that can be tied to a belt or a cian.
Traditionally the ends of these cases were stuffed with a bit of wool to hold the needles in place. A bit of wool is included with the nalbinding needle holder.
The needle case measures approx. 8 cm (3 inches) and will fit the Small size Bone Nalbinding needles.
Of course, the needle cases are lovely for storing other types of sewing, or embroidery needles too.

Fish Leather Bags

Fish skins have been tanned and used for clothing, purses, and even armour in many cultures and countries.Fish skin in modern days is mostly considered to be a waste product and is discarded or ground up for fertilizer or animal foods. The fish skin waste can be reclaimed, tanned and made into beautiful and functional items. Fish leather is stronger than a tanned animal hide because the connective tissues are more like a woven material. When properly tanned, fish leather does not smell fishy, but is soft and supple, much like softly tanned suede leather.

I have begun to work with this wonderful material that nature provides, and to combine it with reindeer leather and wool vadmal, to make purses, bags, bracelets and other items. Because both the fish and reindeer leathers quite delicate to work with most items are carefully hand stitched together rather than using a sewing machine. Each piece can take 8 – 20 hours to complete. Each piece is made from a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of fish leather so every item is unique. The colours and textures vary depending on the species of fish and the tanning methods used. I try to source only fish leather that has been ethically sourced and tanned with natural tanning ingredients.
Please visit my Etsy shop to see the latest hand stitched fish leather products.
I am also tanning some of my own fish leather. Please visit Sami Fish Leather for more information.

Saami Reindeer Leather Coffee Bags

Sami Coffee Bag
This style of reindeer leather bag was used by the Sami to carry their coffee. Coffee was an important commodity to the Sami, so they kept it close to them and carried it in a special bag tied to their waist. As the Sami are a nomadic people, when they set up camp in an area, the wood fire was lit, and the coffee pot was set to brew, ready to be shared with everyone once the tents and camp were set up.

The Sami coffee bags are hand stitched using reindeer leather and Vadmal wool fabric. The bags are decorated with traditional Saami band weaving and pewter thread embroidery.
Vadmal is a woven wool cloth that has been felted. Felting the fabric after weaving, thickens the cloth and makes it wind and water resistant as well as warm. Vadmal is generally woven in a tabby or a twill weave on warp weighted or floor looms. In order to felt the fabric, the wet fabric can be pounded in a hammer mill for several hours in order to flatten and thicken the fabric. The hammering process creates a fabric that looks more like “real cloth” and produces a stable fabric with very little nap and the wool keeps its shine.

Reindeer Leather Purses

I make these reindeer leather pouches and purses using small textile scraps of reindeer leather, because reindeer leather is hard to obtain. The Saami raise reindeer herds mostly for their own use. They use every part of the animal, for food, for clothing, for tools and other items. Only a small portion of reindeer leather is sold to the general public. Nothing is wasted.

Pewter or Tin thread was known as the poor man’s silver. The Saami would melt down pewter or tin plates and spin the metal into a fine thread which they used to make jewellery and decorate their clothing and other items.

The bags and purses are all hand made. The bags are decorated with pewter thread that is hand stitched onto the leather or onto wool vadmal fabric. I use traditional Saami rock are symbols for most of the designs.

Reindeer Leather Clutch Bags
These clutch purses are made using reindeer leather scraps. Each one is different, depending on what I have in stock.
The clutch bags are lined with natural linen fabric, have a handwoven wrist strap and have a zipper closure.
Please check my Web Shop to see the current stock or contact me if you would like to make a custom order.

Wool Vadmal Ipad Cases and Pouches
These Ipad sleeves and covers are made with Norwegian wool vadmal fabric and trimmed with Saami band weaving. Vadmal is a type of wool cloth that has been woven and then beaten while wet in a hammer mill for about 8 hours. The beating treatment felts the wool and makes it wind and water resistant.
These cases fit an Ipad mini. If you would like to order a different size or colour, please contact me.

I hand stitch these keyfobs using small scraps of reindeer leather because reindeer leather is a precious commodity and hard to obtain. Sami Reindeer Leather Bracelets

These Sami style bracelets are handmade in the tradition of my ancestors. I use natural reindeer leather and tin thread to make the bracelet to your custom size and colour. The Sami bracelet is attached with a reindeer antler button. The bracelets are made using a simple yet classic design that is suitable for men and women of all ages.

Tin thread was known as the poor man’s silver. The Saami would melt down pewter or tin plates and spin the metal into a fine thread which they used to make jewellery and decorate their clothing and other items.

Skalleband Shoe Bands

Sami Shoe Bands
Shell Bands, Skallebånd, Vuoddagat, Paulanauhat

Sami patterned shoe bands were traditionally woven on a rigid heddle loom. The woven bands were worn wrapped around the ankles and their purpose was to fasten the reindeer leather boots to the feet and to protect the legs against the snow, similar to modern day gaitors.

Sami Shoe Bands
Sami Shoe Bands

These Sami shoe bands have been woven in the classical tradition using high quality worsted wool yarns imported from Sweden and Finland. All the shoe bands are woven with wool, not cotton yarns, as the wool provides insulation against the snow. The woven wool band will felt with use, making it thicker and more durable against the snow. The shoe bands can be hand washed in cool water and hung to dry. Please do not place them in a washing machine or dryer.

The woven section of the shoe band can be 2-3 meters in length, with an additional 2 meters that is braided or twined. The woven section is wrapped around the middle of the calf, down to the ankle. The braided section is used for tying the band to the ankle. The woven end of the shoe band is stitched with a piece of wool vadmal. The braided end is finished with a tassle.

The woven bands are approximately 1.5 inches or 3-4 cm in width.
The Sami shoe bands can be ordered in a choice of lengths. Measure around your foot by wrapping a tape measure around from your ankle to mid calf. The band should be long enough to cover your pant leg to keep the snow out.

The bands can be ordered in a variety of designs. The Sami often wore shoe bands with simple designs for everyday wear, and more intricately patterned shoe bands for special occasions.
