Isin Sweaters - Handspun Handknit Jumpers
My father told me stories about how his Saami mother used to spin wool, and knit sweaters, hats, socks and mittens for him and his brothers as they were growing up in northern Lapland.
Dyed yarns were in short supply at that time in northern Finland. My grandmother was very happy when Norwegian fishermen would visit their village and bring her a supply of brightly coloured yarns. She wove these into narrow bands and braids to decorate her handiwork.
The Isin sweaters and jumpers are designed in the tradition of my Sami grandmother. The sweaters are made from handspun natural white merino wool. The jumpers are handknit in simple stockinette stitch and the sleeves have a cable stitch down the centre of the sleeve. (This is to add some variety - as the knitter gets bored with plain stitch knitting.)
The sweaters are decorated with a colourful band that has been handwoven on a Sami style weaving reed
The sweaters / jumpers can be ordered in a V-neck jumper style or a V-neck cardigan. The handknit jumpers are trimmed with a handwoven Sami-style band
- In traditional Sami colours, of course..
The handknit cardigans have Norwegian-tyle pewter clasp enclosures.
