Tapestry Yarn Kits

These are hand dyed tapestry wool yarn kits. The yarns that I use for these kits are organic wool, no nylon, no chemicals, just pure natural wool. The yarns are all dyed using natural plant dyes.
The wool yarn is a suitable for embroidery, tapestry work, needlepoint, crochet or fine knitting.
Each skein is approx. 10 meters in length
10 skeins of naturally plant dyed rainbow colours per pack.

The natural dyes are created using plants, leaves, flowers, tree barks and minerals that have been used and tested through the ages. Naturally dyed colours fade gently yet remain beautiful.
Some of the dye plants that I use to create the many shades of the rainbow are:
Reds: Madder root, Brazilwood, Cochineal
Yellows: Weld, Fustic, Dyers Greenwood, Flame of the Forest
Blues: Indigo, Woad, Japanese Indigo
Purples and Greys: Alkanet, Logwood

I love to dye rainbows of colour using natural dye plants. These tapestry yarns are the results of my experiments. Natural dyes produce colours that are unique yet harmonious with each other. Not to be repeated. I hope that you will enjoy creating something new with the yarns as much as I have enjoyed making them.

I will be adding more naturally dyed yarns each week, so please check back for new plant dyed colours.

Please note that hand dyed yarns take up dye at different rates, so may have some colour variation throughout the skein, creating a unique look to the yarn. Some natural dye residue such as Indigo may rub off onto your hands.

Plant Dyed Rya Rug Yarns

For those who would like to make their own traditional style rya (ryijy) rug, I am now hand dyeing rya yarns using natural plant dyes. The world of plant dyes offers much variety and gentle colour to yarns. Each batch is uniquely dyed as the colour and shading varies depending on the soil and growing conditions of the plants, the acidity of the dye water and the length of time in the dyepot. This variety of colour gives a plant dyed rya rug a rich depth of shading.

The Rya Yarns have been designed to work best with the Finnish style of backing that I sell.
Traditionally, the rya pile on a Finnish rug is quite short in length.
The pile is packed quite firmly (4 threads per knot). This allows the pile to stand up quite straight, creating small points of colour in the finished piece, allowing for greater detail in the patterning.

Plant Dyed Rya Rug Yarn – Cost per skein: £7.50
The rya yarns that I currently sell are all hand dyed at the time of your order. I dye the yarns in small skeins of 20 grams per skein. Each skein is approx. 80 meters in length.

Below are tables that gives an estimate of how much yarn you will need depending on the size of rya rug and length of the rya pile.

Short Rya Pile – 1.5 cm
Using a 1.5 cm Rya ruler, a 1 meter length of yarn will tie approx. 12 – 15 knots.
Use 4 yarn threads per knot.

Long Rya Pile – 2.5 cm
When designing a longer length of rya pile, the rya looks best when the pile lies more flatly, overlapping the previous row of knots.
For this type of rya rug, I recommen using 3 threads per knot.
Using a 2.5 cm Rya Ruler, a 1 meter length of yarn will tie approx. 10-12 knots.

Plant Dyed Organic Wool Yarns

I use high quality organic worsted spun wool for my hand dyed rya rug yarns. The yarns are quite soft to the touch. Rya rugs are not designed to be used as a floor rug but are meant to be hung on a wall as a tapestry and family heirloom. Please treat your hand made ryijy with care, so that you can pass it on to future generations. Plant dyes are more sensitive to gentle fading. Please hang your rya rug in a place that is not in direct sunlight, to help preserve the brightness of the colours.

Tablet Woven Bands

Another style of band that I weave are woven using tablets or cards. The tablets usually have 3-6 holes and the warp yarn is threaded through. Complex patterns can be woven by twisting or turning the cards in different directions. The end of the warp can be tied to a post, a table leg, and is woven backstrap style. The warp can also be wound onto a small loom that helps control the tension while weaving.
Narrow bands using tablets has been woven in Karelia and Finland since the early Iron Age. Many of the woven belts that I weave use these traditional Karelian patterns. I use hand dyed wool that I have dyed with natural plant colours to weave these belts and sashes.
If you would like to have a Karelian style belt made for you, please contact me regarding a special order.

Please check out some of the tablet woven bands that are currently in stock in my Web Shop. A few are also sometimes listed in my PaivatarYarn Etsy shop.
